according to the Greek-Saga they represent seven beautiful daughters of Titan Atlas and the Nymph Plejone.
Zeuss had placed the seven and their mother in the night-sky to end the painful tracking by Orion.
The steady rotation of the sky above keeps Orion in an infinite hunt ....but he will never catch up!
